Malaysian Studies Forum 2014

Event DetailsMalaysian Studies Forum 2014
Saturday, March 15, 2014
10:00am - 9:00pm
Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library
Malaysian Studies Forum is an educational event that provides students and faculty members with a great opportunity to share knowledge and critically review important issues pertaining to Malaysia. Previously, under the name Malaysian Forum, we have only had teleconference sessions where prominent people in Malaysia would interact with Malaysian students at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. This year, MiMSA invited academics from various universities particularly in the United States to participate in a full-day intellectual discourse with participants. This forum was opened to all interested participants, including Malaysian students based in other universities in Michigan and neighboring states.
Among the speakers that attended the forum was Prof. Terence Gomez, Prof. Tom Pepinsky, Prof. James Jesudason, Prof. Victor Lieberman and Dr. Azly Rahman; ; hence making it the first program known to be held in the United States that aims to gather American academics specializing in issues pertaining to Malaysia along with Malaysian students. The discussions revolved around Malaysia’s well being, in terms of economic, politics, social and education.
Hopefully, this program will be beneficial not only in creating awareness among Malaysians in the United States, but also in preparing future leaders to build a better Malaysia.

MiMSA Chinese New Year 2014

Event DetailsMiMSA Chinese New Year 2014
Saturday, February 1, 2014
12:00pm - 3:00pm
East Hall 3rd floor terrace
Chinese New Year (CNY) is a joyous time for individuals to reconnect with family and friends as they usher in the new year together. But for many of us Malaysians who are studying abroad, CNY would be the time when we feel homesick. Many of us would wish that we could carry out our family’s CNY traditions such as the tea ceremony on the first day of new year. Or taste delicious CNY food such as ‘Ba Gua’ (Chinese Pork Jerky) or that sweet and crumbly piece of Pineapple Tart that is usually sold in droves near CNY.
With that said, MiMSA strives to recreate the CNY mood in our annual Chinese New Year event by creating an atmosphere filled with familiar food, faces and music. We serve CNY food that remind us of home such as Yee Sang for our starter; Imitation Shark’s Fin Soup, Dao Eu Bak (Soy-sauce Chicken) and Zai Choi (Stir-fried Vegetables) with white rice for the main course; and Mandarin Oranges and Chinese Tea as refreshments. Guests were also able to participate in some CNY-themed activities such as CNY charades and CNY trivia. To liven up the mood, we also had CNY music playing in the background while everybody chattered and mingled around while digging in to their food.
Overall, we had a really good turn out of roughly a hundred attendees during the CNY celebration. From the feedback we gathered, everybody left the event with their tummies full and their hearts contented as they go back to their daily routine as a student in the University of Michigan
