As a volunteer, all you need to do is to count the number of lengths our participants swim and cheer for the them while they are swimming. You'd be able to get an insider's scoop of how the Red Cross organizes fundraising events and meet new people. To show appreciation for our volunteers, we will be giving out Swim-A-Cross Plus T-shirts to them.
The dates and times of our events are:

07/26, Monday, 6:30am-11:30am, Rutherford Pool
08/15, Sunday, 8:30am-4pm, Independence Lake (Season's End Party)
The above times include transportation of volunteers from our office to the events' venue. Getting to our office is simple. It is approximately half an hour journey from Utowers by bus and by foot. Google map American Red Cross - Washtenaw County and you would see what I mean! Alternatively, you could also drive yourself if you have your own vehicle. Please contact Mary Kumbier at 734-255-2359 or Sarah Abe at sac@wc-redcross.org if you have any questions or if you want to sign up.
If you are in Ann Arbor and you are looking for something meaningful to do in the summer, this is your chance! Please help to spread the word to anyone whom you know might be interested. I hope to see you at the splash zone.

Hi everyone!
It is that time of the year again! The arrival of fresh blood!
As many of you would have known by now, a new group of Malaysian
students will be making their way here this Fall. So, as part of our effort to help the new students, UMiMSA is having its Mentorship Program once again and we are looking for current students who are interested in becoming the mentors to these new students.
All applicants are welcome regardless of their class standing or major.

Q: So, what does a mentor do? A: A mentor, as the meaning of the word implies, is someone who will guide a new student at the beginning of his/her life at the university. Basically, what you will most likely be doing is answering many questions that the future students (mentees) will have. As a current student here, you should probably have the answers to most of their questions.
Q: Does that mean that I will only be required to be an answering machine? A: Not quite. At the preliminary stages (before the new student arrives), most of what you will need to do is satisfy the curious nature of your mentee and point him/her in the right direction if he/she would like to find out more about a certain matter. However, after your mentee arrives, you will get the opportunity to interact more with your mentee through other UMiMSA activities that will strengthen the bond between the two of you. The main point is to provide the mentee with somebody who will be there for him/her through the first few steps of his/her education here. Who knows, he/she may end up being one of your close friends.
Q: How does the entire process go? A: Each mentor will be assigned one or two mentees (depending on the number of mentors and mentees we have). From there, you will have to initiate contact with your mentee through email and continue corresponding with your mentee until he/she arrives. After your mentee arrives, we will inform you of what activities the Mentorship Program will carry out to foster better relationships between your mentee and you as well as the rest of the Malaysian community. As a mentor, you are advised to attend these events with your mentee.
Q: Can I choose my own mentee? I was hoping to get to know somebody from the opposite sex better... A: Hahaha. No.
Q: Can I do other things besides emailing my mentee? A: Of course! You can chat through Skype or MSN, add your mentee on Facebook, or even call him/her. If you are in Malaysia, you can even arrange for a meeting between the two of you to talk. After your mentee arrives, you can even ask your mentee to tag along in other activities that you do (potlucks, sports, university events, etc.).
Q: Are there any other responsibilities of a mentor? A: Yes. Every week, the Mentor Mentee Director will check on the progress of the relationship between you and your mentee. You may also be required to just tell the Mentor Mentee Director the kinds of questions that your mentee asks so that the Mentorship Program committee can better address the major concerns of the incoming students as a whole. The Mentor Mentee Director will inform you of any other things that you may have to do throughout the program (although that may not happen too often). Also, mentors are expected to be committed to their tasks throughout the program. Hence, please be sure that you are ready to be one so that you do not complain later on of being bored (a.k.a "sien"/"malas").
Q: What if my mentee asks me something that I do not have the answer to? A: You can address all such questions to the Mentor Mentee Director who will discuss with the rest of the committee (if required) to provide you with an answer.
Q: What if my mentee asks me to help him/her to do something (buy textbooks, electronic gadgets, etc.)? A: The decision to buy stuff like that will mainly be up to you. As it concerns your money, you have the right to decide whether to help your mentee financially. Of course, you may also ask another mentor to help your mentee out in that case if the other mentor is willing. If you are still unsure, you can convey your situation to the Mentor Mentee Director.
Q: What if my mentee is unresponsive (does not reply to your email)? A: The only course of action that you can take is to wait. As the Mentorship Program is more of an effort on UMiMSA's part to help the new students, it is not an absolute must for every new student to participate (although we would greatly appreciate it).
Q: I understand that being a mentor is not just about answering questions before the Fall. So how long does this entire program last? A: What is 1/0? That's right. In principle, the Mentorhip Program does not really end, as its ultimate goal is to create a bond between the mentor and mentee that will last for a very long time. Think of it as being a big brother/sister. You never stop being one. You'll be there to help when needed, but won't always be fully involved in your younger sibling's life. Of course, if your mentee is the most unbearable person in the world (we understand that can happen), at least say hi once in a while.
Q: Who should I look for if I have other questions about the Mentorship Program/ duties of a mentor? A: The Mentor Mentee Director is the main person that you should look for if you have any additional queries about the program. If you encounter any problems during the program, you should also inform the Mentor Mentee Director. |

Hi UMIMSA members,
I am Xinyi, and I am fundraising for the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in
Detroit for a class. They provide hot meals (breakfast, lunch and
dinner), showers, and a change of clothing for people in need. These
include people with mental illnesses, physical disabilities, as well as
the working poor who earn minimum wage and are only able to pay for
their utilities and rent.
I went to visit the soup kitchen last
month. The kitchen was very clean (cleaner than mine!) and the food was
very fresh. The executive director, Jerry Smith, spoke to us directly
and told us that they believed that every human being has a right to
have access to clean, healthy food. The spirit of food justice in
Capuchin soup kitchen was truly inspiring. You can find out more about
them on their website
My
friends and I made some ear studs to sell for charity. All proceeds
would go to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and would help us get closer to
our goal of raising $1000 for them. Pls take a look at the attached pdf,
and if u like it, email me at
for more information. I would also be setting up a table at Angell Hall
on Tuesday all day, so drop by if you're interested in the ear rings or
interested in finding out more about our cause! :) Thanks for your time
(I know this is a long email) Cheers, Xinyi |

Michigan Daily Job Opportunity
The Michigan Daily's opinion section is looking for a diverse group of
passionate individuals to join its team as columnists for the spring and summer terms. In an effort to draw from the biggest pool of students
possible, I would like to enlist the help of you, the leaders and members of student organizations on campus, to pass on my call for columnists
to
your members and anyone else you think may be interested.
Any current student is welcome to apply, regardless of whether or not
you will be taking classes or living in Ann Arbor during the summer. You do
not
have to write about or be interested in politics to be a great
columnist. I
simply want writers that will provoke a thoughtful conversation on
campus
through their writing. An ideal columnist has an engaging voice, a
unique
perspective on the issues they treat and the ability to communicate
effectively through writing.
The Michigan Daily's opinion section should give rise to the voice of
the
student body, and I encourage anyone that wants their voice to be heard
to
apply. Please e-mail me if you or any of your organization's members are
interested at aschiff@umich.edu and I will happily reply with an
application.
Enjoy!
